Middletown Library Hosts Informative Program for Aspiring Town Council Candidates

Program Information:

Understanding Municipal Leadership: An Introduction to What a Middletown Leader Needs to Know

Are you considering a run for the Town Council? Do you want to make a difference in your community but are unsure where to start? The Middletown Public Library is excited to announce a new program designed to equip first-time candidates with the knowledge and tools they need to successfully run for Town Council. Join current Town Council member Barbara VonVillas and special guests to learn about the issues facing Middletown today!

Program Overview:

The series begins with two informational meetings open to the public at the Middletown Library:

  • Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 PM
  • Saturday, June 15 at 10:00 AM

These initial sessions will provide an overview of the program, introduce key topics, and allow attendees to ask questions and gather information about what to expect before the candidate declaration paperwork is due to Town Hall (declarations begin at 8am on Monday, June 24 through Wednesday, June 26 at 4pm).

Following the informational meetings, the program will continue with eight in-depth weekly meetings. These meetings will be held on Thursdays from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at the library on the following dates:

  • July 11
  • July 18
  • July 25
  • August 1
  • August 8
  • August 15
  • August 22
  • August 29

Program Details:

The series, titled “Understanding Municipal Leadership: An Introduction to What a Middletown Leader Needs to Know,” will cover essential topics for anyone considering a run for local office. Each meeting will focus on a different aspect of municipal governance, blending discussion with supporting documentation to provide a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities and challenges faced by Town Council members.

Meeting Topics:

  1. Neighborhoods – Includes maps, Rhode Island ethical standards, and more.
  2. Town Charter and Committees – Explore responsibilities, authority, and relationships within town governance.
  3. Relevant Policies and Responsibilities – Detailed look at local policies and the responsibilities they entail.
  4. Strategic Planning – Learn the basics of strategic planning within a municipal context.
  5. Finance – Understand municipal finance, budgeting, and financial oversight.
  6. Planning and Zoning Issues – Overview of local planning and zoning concerns.
  7. Affordable Housing and Short Term Rentals – Addressing key housing issues in Middletown.
  8. Commercial Development – Focus on the West Side Plan and other development initiatives.

Registration Information:

Everyone is welcome to attend the open informational meetings in June before candidate declarations are due.  Registration is encouraged, but not required.

To participate in the weekly meetings in July and August, registration is required. Interested individuals can register online at middletownpubliclibraryri.org. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

This program is a valuable opportunity for residents who want to engage with their community and consider a leadership role.
